PT XYZ is a well-known vehicle travel operator located in Bandung. One of the busiest routes under their service is Bandung-Soekarno Hatta. There are 18 departures to be dispatched each day and to ensure 100% execution of all departures the company provides 18 units regular vehicles plus 3 units stand by vehicles. The stand by vehicles is provided in case the regular unit has to be put into maintenance program or had an unexpected breakdown. The downturn of economic situation has force the company into conducting efficiency improvement. The first thing that the company wants to check for efficiency is the number of stand by unit vehicle. Being a buffer, the stand by unit is considered as necessary evil that must be set as minimum as possible but still maintaining the 100% service level. This research is aimed to determine the minimum number of stand by unit vehicles that the company has to provide in order to maintain the 100% service level. We use simple statistical theory to calculate the expected value of available vehicle at a particular time. The result shows that in order to maintain 100% service level, the company need to provide only one stand by unit vehicles. This value provides guidance for the company for conducting efficiency attempt they are aiming to do.
